Murder Bug is a short story set in the dark sci-fi and cyberpunk ChromaSpyke universe by Alexander Mharcei.

The contract saves your life.
The system takes what’s left.

In a future London, cybernetic upgrades aren’t luxury. They’re survival. For the hungry and the unlucky, a body contract offers one way out: compliance in exchange for augmentation, biometric access, and time.

After a lockdown grips a subway terminal, Vance is processed, tagged, and escorted home by a corpse unit, one of the half-dead automatons the city uses to enforce order. The warnings are absolute. Quarantine is mandatory. Testing is automatic. Refusal is not an option.

When his results arrive, they point to a lethal condition with only one approved solution.

Implants.

The cost is unreachable without signing a contract. Waiting only narrows the choices.

When the install suite arrives, the procedure is efficient, clinical, and irreversible. Vants survives, but survival comes with conditions, instructions, and a future already accounted for. As the universe refocuses around him, the line between who he was and what he now belongs to collapses fast.

Murder Bug is a dark cyberpunk horror short story about institutional pressure, artificial urgency, and the moment survival stops being a choice and becomes a transaction.

So hold on tight, because Murder Bug is an absolute blast.

It’s the kind of cyberpunk short story that grabs you by the throat from the very first
lines and never lets go. The atmosphere is so heavy… it’s sticky, it’s filthy,
it feels like you’re right there. The future we’re shown isn’t some flashy
thing with flying cars ; it’s a brutal world where technology just drags you
deeper into the mess.

The character Vants is just perfect. The guy isn’t here to save the world ;
he’s just trying to save his own skin. He’s suspicious, a bit cynical,
opportunistic... in short, he’s human. You can feel the guy trapped in a
vicious cycle. And the premise is brilliant : you catch a bio-virus, and
bam, it turns into an unmanageable economic debt before ending up as a
physical nightmare. It’s vicious, it’s clever, it’s brilliant.

The universe is pure, dark genius. The “corpse units,” the contracts on
your own body... and especially that virus that forces the poor to get
“upgraded” so they don’t die : it’s insanely inventive. Visually, it blows
your mind. It is a concept that is here to stay.

And the ending ? A killer. It opens doors to something even bigger, but
it leaves you with that little bitter taste in your mouth that reminds you
that in this world, nobody really wins. It’s coherent, it’s edgy. In short :
it’s flawless.

Go read it, you’re in for a treat.

Love Murder Bug!

I have the Astral Twilight printed copy but I've reread this story multiple times now. The details in the scenes are fantastic and you can really feel the disoriented experience the main character is experiencing through those details. It's high-tech but also relatable for a science fiction story. I wish it was longer! Vants! I hope he shows up again!
