Chitterfield is a novella set in the dark sci-fi and cyberpunk ChromaSpyke universe by Alexander Mharcei.

CHITTERFIELD is a massive deep-space communication relay hidden inside a nest of inertia dampeners, built to endure anything the galaxy can throw at it. Ships move faster than messages. Chitterfield makes sure the messages arrive. It would be madness to sneak inside, worse still to survive what lives there. The only thing more dangerous is spending a lifetime toiling for the corporations that use it.

Deira is a thief, and Chitterfield is the score she was never meant to reach. Smuggled aboard a cassette ship and disguised among corpse units, she enters the station during a narrow transfer window where time itself works against her. Inside the dampener fields, seconds stretch, systems cycle slowly, and every delay gives security more time to adapt.

Chitterfield is not empty. It is alive with hidden infrastructure, flooded corridors, inverted jungles, and defensive systems that do not simply detect intruders. They hunt them. As Deira pushes deeper toward one of the station’s control centers, she realizes the real danger is not being caught, but running out of time before the station finishes responding. The longer she remains inside Chitterfield, the more lethal it becomes.

Chitterfield is a claustrophobic cyberpunk space horror story about theft under impossible constraints, hostile megastructures, and the cost of surviving systems designed to slow you down until you break.

This is a robbery that was never meant to succeed.

Honestly, it really knocked me off my feet.

Right from the first few pages, the stage is set : a break-in at a space station that’s locked down tighter than ever. It’s direct, it’s tense, and it doesn’t waste time on
pointless chatter.

But the real thing that grabs you by the gut is Deira. She’s not some
cardboard superheroine who handles everything without batting an eye.
The girl is at the end of her rope, she’s exhausted, she’s hurting, but she
hangs on. You feel every blow, every drop of sweat… that’s what makes
her so believable and genuinely endearing. You just want to scream at her
to pull through.

The station, Chitterfield, is a pure waking nightmare. The madness of
mixing an artificial (and mezmerizing) jungle with mechanical
monstrosities that want your blood creates a crazy atmosphere. It’s so
beautiful it’ll blow your mind, but you feel like every corner could kill
you.

What’s powerful is that behind the fighting and survival, the story tackles
the tough topics : corporations that squeeze you dry and that
technological horror where even the dead end up being used as tools. It’s
some seriously gritty, visceral cyberpunk that sticks in your head.

The verdict : It’s dark, it’s edgy, and it looks wild. If you like it when sci-fi
shakes you up a bit, go for it. it’s a killer.

Like 'Alice in Wonderland' being shot through a tunnel

Having read the author's other stories, Mharcei is definitely approaching space from a cyberpunk perspective. It shows in this story. Chitterfield is a space station, but it's like a giant machine. Not a place meant for people. Right away, we quickly learn that this isn't going to be a normal sci-fi experience. The ships and station are disorienting and almost designed to be intentionally malfunctioning. Time speeds up and slows down. The horror comes in cycles... you know it's coming and you start reading faster to try to stay ahead of it. A quick read, but fun, and the imagery is great.
